How to start the Hammer Editor?

blog

Hello and welcome to the "How to start the Hammer Editor?" tutorial.

In the fact that the Hammer Editor 3.4 is a little bit different in opposition to the Hammer Editor 4 (SDK), well explain everything from the beginning. This time you have to complete some more steps to open the Editor. We have to configure the whole Hammer Editor.

With the Hammer Editor 3.4 / 3.5 you can create maps for Half-Life & Mods (for example Counter-Strike 1.6). There are some different editors as well but the Hammer Editor is the easiest for beginners.

First of all you have to download some files to start with.

Hammer 3.4

Zoners Half-Life Tools

Lets begin with the installation. Choose your folder where you want to install the Hammer Editor.
For example "C:\Programs\Valve Hammer Editor"

Now insall the "Zoners Half-Life Tools" in "C:\Programs\Valve Hammer Editor\tools".

If you did that, start the Hammer Editor.

On the first start you have the option to use the help of the editor. Click on "no".

Now the "Configure Valve Hammer Editor" Window will appear. There are some tabs where you have to set up some things before the editor can work correct.

Lets start with "General". For now transfer the settings from the screenshots in your program.

Now to 2D Views.

Now to 3D Views.

And now textures. Here you have to use the program GCF Scape to download the WAD files on your computer.

Click on Add WAD to choose the WAD files of the different maps.

Attention: do not open more than 5 WAD files at the same time. This could cause some problems while compiling.

Attention2: Use decals from the decals.wad the hammer editor wont accept any other decals!

Lets go to the tab "Game Configurations". Click at "Configuration:" on edit.

Click on "Add" and type in "Half-Life". Or if you want to create a map for CS, Counter-Strike.

Now you have to set up the following things for the sub-categories:
Game Data files:
C:\Programme\Valve Hammer Editor\fgd\half-life\halflife.fgd
Game Executable Directory (ex: c:\Half-Life)
C:\Steam\steamapps\youraccount\half-life\
Mod Directory:
C:\Steam\steamapps\youraccount\half-life\valve
Game Directory:
C:\Steam\steamapps\youraccount\half-life\valve
RMF Directory:
C:\Programme\Valve Hammer Editor\maps

Now to the important configuration. The Build Programs". Zoners Half-Life Tools got all relevant files in the tools folder of the Hammer Editor. Now you have to specify where the files are.

Game executable:
C:\Steam\steam.exe
CSG executeable:
C:\Programme\Valve Hammer Editor\tools\hlcsg.exe
BSP executeable:
C:\Programme\Valve Hammer Editor\tools\hlbsp.exe
VIS executeable:
C:\Programme\Valve Hammer Editor\tools\hlvis.exe
RAD executeable:
C:\Programme\Valve Hammer Editor\tools\hlrad.exe

The last thing you can set up is "Place compiled maps in this directory before running the game:", is to give the Hammer Editor the order to save the map in the folger of your game. Here we've to choose "C:\Steam\steamapps\youraccount\half-life\valve\maps".

For now that was everything. Hopefuly everything works. If it does you can start create your own maps.
